Turkish research vessel “Oruç Reis” returned on Saturday morning in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus, off the island’s western coast, after crossing into the Greek continental shelf, on Friday, causing increased vigilance on the part of Athens.

Earlier this month, Ankara dispatched “Oruç Reis” in the region to conduct unauthorized seismic research, issuing a navigational telex or navtex.

A military source told CNA that the Turkish vessel was located within the EEZ of Cyprus already at 9.30am (local time) on Saturday morning, having at its final destination the area, part of which falls within EEZ blocks 4 and 5. The Turkish navtex reserved the area until April 10.

The same source said that Oruç Reis crossed into the Greek maritime area due to bad weather conditions prevailing in the region in the past couple of days.

In response to the Turkish navtex, the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus issued an antinavtex on January 14, which is still in place.
