Smugglers attempted to use a drone to fly illegal drugs over the Green Line that separates Turkish occupied northern Cyprus with the rest of the island, Turkish Cypriot media reported.

Police in occupied northern Cyprus were questioning a suspect alleged to have taken delivery of narcotics from a drone which had taken off from Nicosia in the government controlled areas, the Turkish Cypriot Kibris newspaper and Turkey’s private DHA agency reported.

The reports did not disclose the type of drug that was seized. Turkish Cypriot police were not available for comment. Cyprus police said they had no information about the incident, as did the United Nations force which monitors the Green Line.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

The heavily militarised 180 km (116 mile) demarcation line splitting Cyprus east to west runs straight through the centre of Nicosia.

Kibris said the drugs were ‘delivered’ on August 17 to an empty plot of land in Turkish-occupied north Nicosia.

Closed circuit cameras show the suspect taking a package, putting it in his car and leaving the scene, the paper added.
