Three men, all non-Cypriots,  were remanded in custody for eight days by Nicosia district court on Monday as suspects in the murder of a 28 year asylum seeker from Cameroon in central Nicosia early on Sunday morning.

Police investigators told the court that one of the three had admitted to killing the man. The other two deny any involvement, but the first suspect has told police they helped him chase down the victim.

The three suspects aged 27, 30 and 36 are in custody as police investigate conspiracy to commit an offence, premeditated murder, manslaughter, conspiracy to murder and possessing a weapon. They appeared in court without a lawyer.

The court heard that the victim and the suspects were at a club together near Ochi roundabout in Nicosia when at some point the victim attacked one of the three. The suspects then reportedly chased the 28 year old victim and one of them hit him with a broken bottle.

The victim managed to get to Solomou Square where he asked for help and was later found dead by a person being sought by police to give a statement as he was the last person to speak to the victim.

Police are examining CCTV footage from the area.

The three suspects objected to their remand, but the court found the police request to be justified.

A post-mortem examination on the body of the victim is expected to be carried out today.
