OELMEK has urged the Ministry of Education to look into the issue of school security following yesterday’s kidnapping of two pupils from a primary school in Larnaca.
The union released a statement today in which it says that the Ministry should leave aside the “PR tricks we saw lately” and that it should start dealing with the “big, serious problems” of education like the health and security of the pupils.
Yesterday’s incident makes this even more important, says the statement. “There is no doubt that tens of educators try every day, at a personal cost, to cover the deficiencies of the Ministry and those of the society with its many maladies.”
The statement adds that on May 29, OELMEK submitted an in-depth study with suggestions on the issue of health and security at schools but “no actions/decisions have been taken so far by the Ministry.”
