Pupils from Paralimni Lyceum will travel to Brussels in March 2020 to participate in YEYS — a climate summit for young people from the EU.

The summit is being organised by the European Economic and Social Committee and models an international climate change conference (COP). The pupils will be asked to represent a sector, an industry or a group of countries and negotiate with a view to draw up recommendations to deal with climate change.

The Committee said it was interested in hearing students’ fresh ideas on how to deal with the current climate crisis and how to come closer to meeting the 2050 climate-neutral ambitions.

These recommendations will be submitted to international environment policy-makers and discussed at conferences around Europe throughout the year.

During YEYS, the students will also be put in contact with international youth organisations that will help them translate these recommendations into concrete measures and make their voice hear

YEYS will be held on March 19 and 20, with the participation of pupils from a total of 33 secondary schools selected after a draw from nearly 800 schools which applied was held on November 27 in Brussels. One school was selected from each EU member state and from the five candidate countries — Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey.

Each school will be represented by three pupils aged 16 to 18 who will be accompanied by one teacher.

A member of the Committee will visit the selected schools, where he/she will provide information about the EESC and its working methods and also present and discuss the working document of the event.

The participating schools will receive a working document with open questions to help pupils and their teachers shape their ideas and prepare for the debate in Brussels. The pupils and teachers must discuss and try to answer those questions in class, so as to be ready for the live discussions when in Brussels
