Paphos: Man fined €1980 for 250 limesticks

Police in Paphos have fined a 61 year old man €1980 after finding 250 limesticks in his home.

The limesticks were confiscated. The fine was issued in consultation with the Game Service.

Paphos police investigations continue.

The trapping of blackcaps and other songbirds using limesticks and mist nests is illegal.  Cyprus has come under fierce criticism in the past from environmentalists for failure to eliminate what is widely seen as a barbaric practice.

However, progress has been made with the Committee Against Bird Slaughter saying in May that spring illegal trapping was at a historic low.
