Operator injured after Nicosia Flight Control Centre ceiling collapses (photo)

A Nicosia Flight Control Centre operator has been transferred to hospital with injuries on his head and hands after the ceiling of the centre collapsed on Thursday afternoon.

The centre’s coordinator told philenews that around 1:30 pm he heard a loud sound in the office but managed to move before the ceiling and the airconditioners installed on it collapsed.

The injured operator did not hear the sound as he was wearing headphones and giving directions to planes, the coordinator said.

Transport Minister Vassiliki Anastasiadou is on her way to the scene.

The roof was rennovated six months ago, philenews reports. It said that air traffic control operators have been expressing concerns about the safety of the building for years now.

A new €16 m Air Traffic Control Centre has been built in Kokkinotrimithia, but remains unused.
