A State Department Official has reiterated US support for Cyprus’ sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) during a meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides.

Christodoulides, who is paying Washington a visit, had a meeting with Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources at the US Department of State Francis Fannon on Tuesday morning. Which according to diplomatic sources, was “very constructive.”

Discussion focused on the energy prospects of the Eastern Mediterranean and their significance both for the region’s countries, by contributing in their economic growth and prosperity, as well as for Europe.

Fannon reiterated the American government’s support of Cyprus’ sovereign rights to explore and exploit its natural sources within its EEZ.

At 1600 local time (2000 GMT) Christodoulides will have the opportunity to meet with Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell followed by a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

A well-informed diplomatic source has said that for the first time important announcements are expected to be made after the meetings conclude, confirming the upgraded relations between the United States and Cyprus.

These announcements are expected to have to do with the two countries’ intention to further deepen their partnership and to promote common approaches in a significant number of issues.
