Russia’s Permanent Representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov has reiterated his country’s support of Cyprus reunification efforts, has said that permanent UN Security Council members should play an active role in the search for a settlement and has stated his country’s support of the continued presence of UNFICYP in Cyprus.

Chizhov, who was addressing the 14th The Economist conference, in Nicosia, on Friday, said “our Cypriot friends know that for many years we have been consistently supporting efforts aimed at reuniting the island.”

I can confirm, he added, “my country’s commitment to a comprehensive, viable and fair solution of the Cyprus problem,” in the interest of both Cypriot communities and based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The Russian diplomat also expressed the view that the five permanent members of the Security Council, who have a special responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, must play “an active role in the search for a settlement and be able to guarantee the outcome.”

“We also support the continued presence of the UN peace keeping force in Cyprus which is charged with important stabilising functions,” he pointed out.

Referring to the energy sector Chizhov stressed that cooperation “should be a crucial factor of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

Russia has been a reliable partner for many European countries in the field of energy, he pointed out, referring also to Russian companies’ involvement in natural gas projects and noting that Russian companies would be interested to cooperate with Cyprus in developing its own reserves.
