Murder suspect arrested in Turkish-occupied north

November 2, 2018 at 5:00pm

A man suspected of murdering his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her 13 times, was arrested today in the village of Gerolakkos in the Turkish-occupied north, Turkish Cypriot media reported.

According to Kibris, the woman’s funeral took place yesterday, with the newspaper stating that there were no representatives of women’s organizations at the ceremony despite the reaction on social media for the murder of another woman.

Meral Akinci, wife of Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, announced a protest against violence on women on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

“We will not allow the normalisation of violence and murders against women,” she said.

Akinci was speaking during a press conference where she condemned domestic violence and noted that “every day it gets worse,” referring to the increased amount of violent incidents against women in the Turkish-occupied north.
