New record as tourist arrivals up by 4.8% in April

Tourist arrivals to Cyprus rose by 4.8% in April compared to the same month the previous year to total 329,308 in April which is the highest ever recorded for the specific month, the Cyprus Statistical Service said on Friday citing the results of Passengers Survey. Arrivals in April 2018 stood at 314,143.

For the period of January – April 2019 arrivals of tourists totalled 686,783 compared to 683,581 in the corresponding period of 2018, up 0.5% and outnumbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first four months of the year.

Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom, Cyprus’ biggest market,  rose by 5.4% in April 2019 compared to April 2018 while an increase of 2.3% was recorded for tourists from Russia and a 37.0% increase from Israel. Tourist arrivals from Greece remained at the same level as last year.

There was a 16.4% drop in tourist arrivals from Germany and a 4.5% drop in arrivals from Sweden.

Main countries
The United Kingdom constitutes the main source of tourism for Cyprus for April 2019, with a proportion of 35.4% while arrivals from Russia comprise 15.2% of total arrivals, from Israel 7.1% and from Greece 6.2%.

Purpose of visit
For a 78.4% of tourists, the purpose of their trip in April 2019 was holidays, for 14.3% visit to friends and relatives and for 7.3% business

Cypriots travelling abroad

As regards the number of Cyprus residents returning from abroad, the total for April was 116,970 which is 3.1% up  on the same month the previous year. Greece was the most popular destination with 34,991 though numbers were down 18% over April 2018.

The UK was second with 14,746 — up 6.4% on the same month last year
