Green Party MP Giorgos Perdikis tabled a bill under which victims of crimes will be informed ahead of the perpetrator’s release.
This follows the public uproar after a rape victim accidentally bumped into her paedophile rapist she did not know had been released.
According to European directives, it is the right of the victim and her/his family to know when the convicted person responsible for the victim’s situation will be released, Perdikis said.
The release of the perpetrator violated the provisions of the Lanzarote Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Abuse, AKEL MP Eirini Charalambidou said.
She also said that she will table a motion in the House Human Rights Committee to make informing the victim ahead of a perpetrator’s release compulsory.
