Nicosia Criminal Court on Wednesday cleared a 51 year old man of charges of sexually abusing a girl after she retracted her statement.
The girl, now aged 16, had filed a complaint in 2017 saying that she has been raped twice when she was nine years old by the boyfriend – then aged 40 — of the home help.
He was arrested and remanded in custody and a trial was underway in Nicosia. Today, the attorney general’s office submitted a new videotaped statement by the teen girl saying that her charges were false and that it was unfair for an innocent man to be convicted.
Based on that, the charges were dropped and the man acquitted on all counts.
“The truth has shone through, even belatedly and after considerable suffering,” the defendant’s lawyer Stylianos Avgousti said.
