Limassol police are probing a case of child abandonment, CyBC radio said on Tuesday morning.

It said that a 10 year old girl had been taken to Ayios Ioannis police station on Monday afternoon by a Cypriot couple who had found the child alone on Franklin Roosevelt avenue.

CyBC said the child had told police that her mother had picked her up from school at lunch and the two had boarded the bus. However the mother had got off the bus, leaving the child alone. The girl remained on the bus, got off at another stop and met up with friends  but at some point left the other children and started wandering through the streets alone.

CyBC said police have located  and arrested the 26 year old mother while the 10 year old has been placed in the care of social services.
