Until 30 September 2018, 838 people were charged with drug-related charges in 2018, compared to 912 in 2017, Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou said.
Regarding drug trafficking, the number of arrests in 2018 stood at 157 in the end of September, compared to 163 last year. So far seven of those arrested in 2018 have been sentenced, with the sentences ranging from six months to five years in prison.
The arrested persons in 2017 were involved in 115 cases of drug trafficking and in 104 cases until the end of September this year.
According to Nicolaou, last year, the drug prevention unit investigated 950 cases of illegal drug use, involving 1094 people. Some 912 persons were accused of drug possession during the same time period. In 2018, 911 cases were investigated, involving 1,019 persons and 838 were accused of drug possession.
Nicolaou also said that over the past three years, 3,384 people were enrolled in treatment programmes. 1,304 in 2015, 1,286 in 2016 and 1,294 in 2017.
