Residents of the Ayios Constantinos and Eleni neighbourhood in Dali registered their opposition to the operation of an asphalt factory near a residential area by planting trees near the parish church.
The event was organised by the municipality, the church committee and associations of the area. Greens president and MP Yiorgos Perdikis also attended.
In statements, Dali mayor Leontios Kallenos said protection of the environment should be a priority for all. “We will continue our struggle to protect our health, demanding the speeding up of procedures to move the asphalt factory from near a residential area,” he said.
It was also announced that the Dali third primary school will close on Tuesday and a delegation will go to the Presidential Palace to deliver a petition to President Nicos Anastasiades.
The one day closure was decided at an extraordinary meeting of the school’s parents’ association who urged parents to keep their children away from school in protest at the unacceptable air quality.
On December 7, the residents of the neighbourhood had protested on the Halepianon road while twice in the past they have blocked the entrance to the factory with their cars.
