A 37 year old man wanted by police in connection with a human trafficking and sham marriage cane was arrested in Nicosia on Sunday night and is expected to appear in court on Monday to be remanded in custody.
The man is being held on suspicion of trafficking an adult person with the aim of exploitation to commit a criminal offence, a sham marriage, securing documents under false pretenses and conspiracy to commit an offence.
The alleged offences were committed in Cyprus in 2018 and 2019.
The man was named by a 19 year old woman from the EU as part of an immigration police investigation to determine whether a marriage carried out in a Larnaca district municipality on June 16, 2018 was genuine.
That marriage was between the 19 year old and a 21 year old third country national who was arrested and remanded in custody last week.
The Cyprus News Agency said that during her personal interview the woman had said that her marriage was a fake.
She said she had been contacted by a Greek Cypriot from Nicosia who knew she faced financial problems and told her that he would give her 1300 – 1500 euro for a sham marriage and another 200 euro a month for the period during which they remained married.
The human trafficking unit deemed her a possible human trafficking victim.
