A 21 year old youth was killed in the Nicosia district on Sunday night when he lost control of his car and crashed into an electricity pole, trapping him inside. He was named as Phidias Savvides, 21.
The accident, the second road fatality in Cyprus over the weekend, occurred at around 11 pm on Tevkros Anthia Avenue in Dali.
Police said that under conditions which are being investigated, the driver lost control of his vehicle which hit the pavement and then smashed into an electricity pole, knocking it down.
The car caught fire which was extinguished by members of the public. The driver was trapped in the car and was freed by fire fighters and taken to Nicosia Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
He is the second young man to lose his life on the roads this weekend. An 18 year old biker was killed in Limassol on Saturday evening when he lost control of his motorbike as he was overtaking a car and hit a parked vehicle.
