Work safety standards in the north ‘unsatisfactory’

Figures released by the Turkish Cypriot health office have shown that health and safety standards in the north are not up to par.

According to the data, 2016 has seen 83 work-related accidents during which seven fatalities occurred. Out of the seven people who lost their lives on the job, six were construction workers and one was a food delivery man.

Hasan Felek, who is head of Turkish Cypriot labour union DEV-IS, later disputed the findings saying that the figure should in fact be eight fatalities. Felek was referring to the driver of the Kyrenia bus crash who died along with two pupils in the November 29 crash on Pentadaktylos.

According to the statistics, five out of the seven fatalities were due to falls, one was a traffic accident and one was due to electrocution.
