The deportation of a Ukrainian woman from Cyprus has been ordered after her elderly husband admitted that she would clean and look after him if they tied the knot.
In 2012, the woman raised suspicions at the Civil Registry and Migration Department when she married the then 75-year-old man. He is today 80 and although her age has not been disclosed to the media, the age difference is said to be vast.
A judicial hearing at the Civil Court in Paralimni had heard how she had arrived on the island in 2003 as a seasonal agricultural worker before then managing to obtain a permit to work as a domestic servant.
The marriage came under scrutiny and after an interview with the 80-year-old that explained the marriage had been arranged after the woman had offered to look after him and clean his apartment.
Government officials declared the marriage a sham and ordered the woman to leave Cyprus under regulations outlawing marriages of convenience.
The woman appealed the Migration Department’s decision in court, but faced with the overwhelming evidence against her, the court upheld the department’s ruling regarding the status of the marriage.
Her immediate deportation has been ordered.
