The House of Representatives has rendered void the law making voting in elections compulsory.
According to the law as it was in effect, not voting in certain elections, such as the presidential elections, was a crime which could be fined with £200.
The law was struck down with 40 votes in favour of the bill, and 3 against it (ELAM and Anna Theologou of Citizens’ Alliance).
A report by the House Interior Committee said that it is necessary that the law be made void, due to the inability of the authorities to actively enforce it. The report further said that the law has essentially been inactive for many years.
