Convicted former Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas has been handed a two-year prison sentence for his involvement in the Paphos Landfill (Chyta) scandal.
The Nicosia Criminal Court sentenced Vergas to two years for bribery, one year for extortion and one year for abuse of power.
The sentences will be served concurrently and only after he has served the two-year prison sentence imposed on him for his involvement in the Paphos Sewerage Board (SAPA) scandal.
In announcing the Court’s decision, the presiding judge said that personal and family factors had contributed to a degree of leniency in the penalty imposed on Vergas.
The court also took into account that Vergas had agreed to return to the State in the form of real estate of the amount received in bribes, which it considers as a sign of remorse, as well as Vergas’ cooperation with investigating authorities and his intention to turn state witness in the case.
