Turkish navy uses live rounds in exercise off Paphos

The Turkish navy performed exercises with live ammunition in Cyprus territorial waters just 30 nautical miles south-east of Paphos on Sunday night during an illegal NAVTEX.

The Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordinating Centre responded with a counter-NAVTEX while simultaneously reporting the illegal Turkish violation of Cyprus territorial waters to the relevant international bodies.

The Turkish navy is set to remain in the area as it has programmed further exercises with live ammunition for Wednesday.

Further naval manoeuvres have been programmed for areas east of Rhodes and south of Kastelorizo

The Turkish naval exercises coincide with a joint Cyprus-Israeli military exercise held within the framework of the annual cooperation program between the two countries.

The exercise – named ‘ONISILOS-Gedeon 1/2017’ – will finish on Wednesday.

The exercise, according to a statement by the Cyprus Defence Ministry, will take place “within the Nicosia FIR and the overland of the Cyprus Republic and it involves personnel and armoured vehicles of the National Guard as well as aircraft from the Israeli Air Force.”
