Germany is a market that has grown over time in the history of Cypriot tourism and, even though numbers had been disappointing in recent years, things are definitely looking up.
The improvement has been put down to concerted actions by tourism operators in Cyprus (government, CTO, Hermes Airports, travel agents, hoteliers). It can also not be overlooked that neighbouring markets are experiencing problems (Egypt, Turkey), encouraging tourists choose safer destinations like Cyprus.
By 2016, Germany was in fourth place as a tourism source for Cyprus, which raised hopes for this important market to grow further. This year arrivals from Germany this year broke all previous records, as the two Hermes Airports saw more than 40 regular flights sheduled by seven companies sheduled. Last year there were 97,000 airline seats devoted to visitors from Germany, and this year it is anticipated to reach 213,000 through flights from 11 different cities in Germany.
This was also helped by the fact that the CTO had agreements with major tour operators to improve accessibility from Germany to Cyprus, which had the effect of increasing flights and by 120% of air routes from Germany To Cyprus in 2017 compared to 2016.
According to the official data of the Statistical Service and the CTO, tourist arrivals from Germany in 2016 increased by 10.5% (124,030 tourists) compared to 2015, which had also increased by 30% (112,219 tourists) on the previous year. The record year was 1997 when 250,000 tourists came to Cyprus from Germany. This year, up to July alone, 97,512 German tourists had already visited Cyprus.
Moreover, according to the Statistical Service, arrivals of tourists from all countries including Germany recorded an increase of 10.1% in July 2017 compared to the same month last year and were the highest recorded in Cyprus to date for a July. Also, 531,030 tourists arrived in Cyprus that month compared tio 482,132 in July 2016.
For the period January-July 2017, tourist arrivals amounted to 1,994,236, compared to 1,737,372 in the corresponding period of 2016, marking an increase of 14.8%, while overtaking the previous highest number of arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first seven months of the year.
The United Kingdom and Russia were the main source of tourism for Cyprus in July 2017, with rates of 33.3% and 24.3% respectively, while arrivals from Israel were 8.0% and Sweden 4.3%. It is added that arrivals from the United Kingdom increased by 6% in July 2017 compared to July 2016, while there was an increase of 82.6% from Israel. Increases were also seen in other important markets, such as Sweden (17.3%) and Germany (69.5%). On the other hand, there was a decrease of 3.6% in tourist arrivals from Russia.
It is noted that German visitors in 1986 numbered only 55,000 (6.1% of the total), and ten years later, their number increased considerably (240,000 12.3% of total arrivals). In 2006, arrivals from Germany amounted to 6.4% of total arrivals (152,808), while in 2016,with 124,254 German tourists made up on only 3.9% of the total.
