The Gym

The first time I visited was for brunch. That’s when I acquired my first favourite dish at The Gym. The salad with rocket, baked halloumi, raisins, peanuts and the superb lountza vinaigrette, is in my eyes, representative of the general philosophy behind the menu: The coming together of creative international cuisine with interesting ingredients and familiar Cypriot flavours.  A highlight on the menu was the baked calamari with black taramas while the quinoa with herbs and crispy rice is a successful combination of tastes.
The pancetta, cooked slowly with carob sauce is particularly tasty. The risottos are always well cooked,  while the seafood dishes, such as the fresh tuna fillet with aubergine puree, the shrimps wrapped in kantaifi in  BBQ sauce were equally excellent.
As regards the flavours, a very positive sign is that the chef is happy to experiment with a range of ingredients at hand to create imaginative dishes which are far from ordinary. New additions with seasonal flavours make their way on the menu while special reference should be made to the interesting choice of wines, with emphasis on local wines from small estates and Cypriot varieties.
However, the menu has changed and a new, autumn one is now being served. Again, seasonal ingredients are used in a creative way and the new dishes are very interesting.
As regards desert, it’s made when you order. Among the best I’ve ever tasted is the tiramisu with bitter chocolate. The Gym also has a great bar where you can try some of the superb cocktails created by bartender Stefanos Athanasiou. Start with Νο.1 and continue with Forêt Noir, the Dynasty accompanied with hiromeri, try their Gin ‘n’ Tonic, while the Ziv ‘n’ Tonic, is an interesting variation based on zivania.
