Meet the Boxtrolls. They’re a community of lovable oddballs who live underneath the streets of Cheesebridge, wear recycled cardboard boxes, and venture above ground at night to scavenge for mechanical cast-offs and other choice bits of junk. With its unique and very original visual style, this is a feast for the eyes. Dark. Different. Slightly deranged. It’s like a cheese dream made real. The Boxtrolls themselves come across like low-tech minions, but this is a movie that’s far from low-tech. In fact, its blend of puppetry and CGI is rather brilliant. In terms of tone, its blend of sweet and sour won’t sit comfortably with everyone. And the story is serviceable, without doing anything particularly ingenious. But it’s got heart. And morals. And can there really be much wrong with a movie that blends Fungus the Bogeyman with the Child Snatcher section of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang..?!
