Teen says pharmacy sold her Xanax without prescription

Ayia Napa police are investigating a complaint by a 16-year-old girl, who says she was able to buy Xanax to treat anxiety without a doctor’s prescription.

The teenage girl walked into the police station in Ayia Napa, accompanied by her father, and filed a complaint saying that on January 27 she visited a Pharmacy in the resort town and was able to purchase Xanax without a medial prescription.

Xanax, also known as Alprazolam in generic form, is a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. But patients need to talk to their doctor or psychiatrist first, to discuss their condition and see whether Xanax can be prescribed.

Doctors often prescribe Xanax as a short-term fix for moments of acute anxiety or to help manage specific phobias, but the drug is often abused in in high doses and can lead to physical dependence.
