TC airport workers in assembly protest

Ground staff at Tympou (Ercan) Airport were set to hold a demonstration outside the assembly building in northern Nicosia on Tuesday in protest over layoffs made by their employers.

Turkish Cypriot workers union Dev-Is announced that employees of the Cyprus Airport Service (CAS) will stage a demonstration outside the assembly building in protest over sackings made by the company. The workers in question concern ground service staff at the Turkish Cypriot airport.

According to the announcement, the workers have also accused the CAS of preventing people from joining the Dev-Is, going as far as to accuse them of laying off 21 workers in retaliation because some of their workers joined the union.

The announcement states that while the layoffs are continuing “the pressure and threats towards workers is increasing. There is no tranquillity in the workplace; there is a fascist and authoritarian aura”.

The union states that it will continue its struggle for the right to syndicate, the return of the people fired, and for the signing of a collective labour agreement.
