A Filipino sailor was airlifted to hospital in Nicosia on Sunday after suffering a serious injury on a ship situated some 35 nautical miles southeast of Larnaca.
The distress signal was sent out from the Panama-flagged ship ‘Gaz Venezia’ at 2.55pm and the ‘NEARCHOS Plan’ of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center of Cyprus (JRCC) was mobilised.

A helicopter from the Health Ministry then flew out to the ship to collect the sailor – said to be a man from the Philippines and whose condition was declining. The patient arrived at Nicosia General Hospital at 5.30pm.
The Consulate of the Philippines in Nicosia has been notified of the incident. Doctors have yet to issue a statement about the condition of the man.
