Residents halt army shooting exercise

Angry residents from Kalo Chorio in Larnaca stormed the National Guard shooting range on Monday while military conscripts and officers were in the middle of a drill in protest over the continuous exercises in their village.

A group of villagers impeached the restricted military zone on Monday morning to protest what they describe as “health and safety risk” to villagers. The community has repeatedly called for an end to shooting exercises at the firing range.

The residents are demanding a complete dismantling of the shooting range, saying it ought to be moved somewhere else.

Police were called in to remove the protesters while Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides was scheduled to meet with them this coming Friday to discuss the issue.
