Saying that it is not his intention to engage in a war of words, President Nicos Anastasiades responded to comments made by Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci by stating that “it is others who are looking for reasons to object.”
Akinci had reacted negatively to a proposal made by Anastasiades to first settle the issues of Territory, Security and Guarantees, and then move on to other chapters in the Cyprus problem negotiations.
“There is no constructive proposal, only a bid for preconditions to be set for a meeting in Geneva on Cyprus…that’s why we cannot keep our mouth shut,” Akinci said.
Anastasiades was asked about Akinci’s comments at an event in Limassol, at which point he said: “I will speak on Monday. It is not my intention to engage in a exchange of words from afar. It is others who are looking for reasons to object.”
On Monday, President Anastasiades is scheduled to brief the National Council – his advisory body on the Cyprus problem – on the latest developments.
