Police in Cyprus have been clamping down rigorously on cases of child pornography and child sex offences this week with three people arrested and another two jailed.
The most recent case involved a 46-year-old man from Nicosia who was taken into custody on Thursday after an arrest warrant was issued against him. The man had been identified by EUROPOL who had tracked him allegedly sending material explicit material involving children through a social media network.
Investigators searched the man’s home where they seized a laptop, a mobile phone and three USBs. He is currently in police custody.
The latest arrest is part of a sweep by the Cyprus Cyber Crime Unit on cases relating to child pornography and child sex offences this week during which others have also been pinged and taken into custody.
Elsewhere, two men – one said to be a 29-year-old man and the other a 39-year-old military officer – have also been arrested on charges relating to possession and circulating child pornography.
In other cases, police succeeded in securing jail terms for another two individuals – the first a two-month prison sentence for a man who admitted two charges of possession of child pornography and sexual abuse of a child.
The second jail term is for a man of 44 from Limassol who was jailed for four years after admitting to being in possession of over 2,000 explicit pictures of videos of minors.
