Comunist party Akel has overwhelmingly backed scientist Stavros Malas as their approved candidate in the 2018 Presidential Elections.
Sunday vote was an expected formality as the party’s leadership hasdrubber stamped Malas as the chosen one after being rejected by other candidates.
During the party conference in Nicosia 963 members voted for Malas, 3 against with 5 blank votes.
Akel leader Andros Kyprianou told the rank-and-file to put their weight behind Malas to bring about ‘real change’ for a ‘better tomorrow’ and end social inequality.
Malas ran on the Akel ticket four years ago but lost to Nicos Anastasiades who is expected to run again.
The first round of the election is scheduled for the last Sunday in January.
