Omonia and AEK with plenty still to do

Omonia has plenty of work to do if they are to keep their Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup dreams alive after being held to a first leg 0-0 draw against Last 16 opponents Ethnikos Achnas on Wednesday night.

John Carver’s side had dominated chances against Ethnikos Achnas – who have been on a strong run of form of late – but struggled to find a way past Martin Bogatinov at the GSP Stadium. They will need to know beat Ethnikos at the Dasaki Stadium on January 18 or secure a scoring draw to go through.

Ethnikos had Eduardo Pinceli sent off for a second booking.

AEK Larnaca also endured a difficult evening on Wednesday after labouring to a 2-1 win over Karmiotissa.  Coach Imanol Idiakez dropped several regulars for the game but it looked to have little impact on his side as Constantinos Charalambides and Nicos Englezou fired AEK into a 2-0 lead before the break.

But Karmiotissa came out fighting after the break at the AEK Arena and managed to reduce the deficit with an impressive curling effort from David Poljanec.

AEL clinched a 2-0 win over neighbours Aris after goals from Mikel Arruabarrena (penalty) and new signing Piti but the victory was marred by the sending off of Charis Kyriakou.

Anorthosis defeated second division side ASIL 2-0 after goals from Esmael Goncalves – who scored from the spot – and Calo. Olympiakos Nicosia beat Ethnikos Ashias 2-0 in the all-second division encounter.
