Novice driver caught speeding at 203km/h

Police caught a 19-year-old driver going over twice the speed limit and over the legal alcohol limit for novice drivers.

According to a police announcement, the Nicosia youth was travelling at 203km/h along the Larnaca to Nicosia highway where the speed limit is 100km/h.

Attempting to escape the police, he also engaged in reckless driving, swerving across lanes and running a red light before colliding with a police car.

A subsequent test found the level of alcohol in his blood to be 14 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath (μg) instead of 9μg of breath which is the maximum for novice drivers and others in the high risk group. The maximum for other grous is 22μg.

The high risk group is made up of novice drivers, motorcyclists, those driving trucks, bus drivers, taxi drivers, and those transporting hazardous cargoes.
