A series of measures to prevent and handle the outbreak of fires have been announced by the office responsible for forestry management in the north.
The move comes amid hot weather and the recent devastating fires in the south of Cyprus.
According to reports from the north, the public has been reminded that lighting a fire outdoors, including at picnic spots, has not been allowed since May 1 with violators facing a fine of twice the minimum wage or a year in prison, or both. The ban is in place until October 31.
Drivers have also been reminded not to throw cigarette butts out of the car and anyone who spots spoke or a fire reminded to immediately call 177, the Forest Fire hotline, or emergency number 199.
A fire close to Kantara Castle was quickly contained on Sunday.
