Nicosia highrise residents trapped by fire

Residents of a block of flats in Aglandjia, Nicosia, were in the early hours on Sunday temporarily trapped in their homes when their buildings was flooded with smoke after three cars were set alight outside.

According to the police, the alarm was raised at around 2.45am. Police officers and firefighters rushed to the scene and eventually managed to get all the residents out safely but three were taken to Nicosia General Hospital with respiratory difficulties. They were soon after sent home.

The three cars were completely destroyed. The police believe one of the cars, belonging to a 74-year-old resident of the building was deliberately set alight and that the flames then spread to the other two cars. Investigations are continuing.
