A 32-year-old man from Nicosia has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment after being found guilty of trafficking 13kilos of cannabis.
The drugs arrived on the island on December 15, 2015 from Spain through a courier company and were collected by a Greek national who had been waiting for the shipment to arrive in Cyprus.
According to the Nicosia Criminal Court, the 32-year-old, who is unable to work due to his addiction and who was receiving welfare assistance, was the mastermind behind the operation, giving orders and making the necessary arrangements.
Passing sentence after he was found guilty of illegally possession of drugs with intent to sell, the court said that the punishment was befitting for the severity of the crime.
“The large number of such cases involving the smuggling of drugs constitutes a sentence that will act as a deterrent to others,” announced the court.
The court also took into account that the 32-year-old had entered a detox programme while in prison and had started attending lessons in order to complete middle school.
Two further suspects involved in the case, who have pleaded guilty to the charges against them, have already been sentenced.
