The 2017-2018 CYTA Championship gets under way on Saturday although the games involving APOEL, AEK and Apollon have been postponed because they were in European action in midweek.
Saturday’s opening game of the new season will see Panagiotis Engomitis’ Ethnikos Achnas hosting newly-promoted Alki Oroklini, while the later kick-off will see AEL and Aris meet in the Limassol derby. On Sunday, Nea Salamina will meet Anorthosis in the Famagusta derby while in the Monday night kickoff, Olympiakos Nicosia will take on Doxa.
- Mixed fortunes for Apollon and AEK
- APOEL sink Slavia in Champions League first leg
- Bogus football coaches feel the squeeze
The postponed games are: Ermis-APOEL, Omonia-AEK and Paphos FC-Apollon. APOEL had defeated Slavia Prague 2-0 in the first leg of the Champions League playoffs while Apollon – who are in the Europa League playoffs along with AEK Larnaca – defeated Danish opponents Midtjylland 3-2. AEK succumbed to a 3-1 defeat away to Viktoria Plzen.
APOEL clinched the league title last season, while Apollon Limassol lifted the Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup after beating APOEL 1-0 in the final.
This year’s Cypriot Super Cup was again won by Apollon, who once again managed to beat APOEL in the final at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca.
This year’s championship will see three teams relegated and only one team promoted from the second division because the 2018-2019 season will only feature 12 teams in the top division.
