Maronite church restored in the north

A ceremony marking the completion of conservation works on Ayia Marina Church in the north will be held on May 24.

The Maronite church is situated in Ayia Marina (Gurpinar) and the completion ceremony is open only to invited dignitaries and members of the media as the village the church is situated in, also called Ayia Marina, is currently not habitable.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in July last year said the Turkish army intended to return the village to its former Maronite residents.

He did not say when this would be, noting significant work on its infrastructure was required.
