Man torches himself outside estranged wife’s home

Police say a man is in hospital with serious injuries after torching himself outside the home of his estranged wife in Choirokoitia village.

According to investigators, a 63-year-old man had arrived at the home of his estranged wife in Choirokoitia village at around 1am on Monday morning and began shouting to her to come out and speak to him otherwise he would burn himself.

Witnesses say the man was in a frantic state and was holding a steel gas cylinder with a rubber hose attached, which he lit and converted into a makeshift blowtorch.

Police officers arrived on the scene and managed to wrestle the hose and cylinder out of his hands but not before he managed to burn his hands and face.

He was then taken to Nicosia General Hospital to have his burns – which doctors have described as serious – treated.
