Larnaca Airport has been hailed as an accessibility pioneer for people with mobility problems after taking first place out of 500 other airports around the world.
Speaking to state radio on Thursday, Hermes Airports spokesperson Adamos Aspris said that the Airports Council International (ACI) had awarded Larnaca Airport first place from amongst 500 airports in 45 countries around the world.
“It is indeed a very important honour because this is the first time in history that a Cypriot airport has managed to get first place,” Aspris said, noting that ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities was a particularly demanding category.
Last year, Larnaca Airport had got a special mention in the ‘Most Accessible Airport for People with Disabilities’ category, he added.
Aspris outlined some of the facilities which helped the airport take first place.
These, he said, included special boarding equipment, such the use of the ‘Eagle lift’ which facilitates the embarkation and disembarkation of people with disabilities and mobility difficulties.
The airport was also commended for its level of accessibility with regard to check-in machines and E-gates.
Larnaca Airport was also praised for interesting additional features including plug sockets for electric wheelchairs, free parking for 120 minutes and a cooperation with senior travel groups, and what the ACI described as much improved accessibility features on the airport website.
“Some of these facilities have been around for a while, some are more recent,” Aspris added, noting that airport staff at all levels – including himself – had undergone training on how to best assist people with disabilities.
He also commended Terminal Services Manager of Hermes Airports, Sophie Christofidou who is also responsible for facilities and services for people with reduced mobility, as well and the company S & L Airport Services Ltd, responsible for the delivery of the services for people with disabilities at Larnaca Airport.
Aspris said people could request additional assistant through their airline or by contacting the airport directly while information was available on their official website or by calling 77778833.
