Cyprus Olympic medallist Pavlos Kontides needs to finish within four points of Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Bernaz to win the laser class category in the World Championships held in Santander, Spain.
Kontides who was in tenth place at the close of the first day on Tuesday managed to improve his performance to move up the scoreboard after winning the second heat on Wednesday with 21 penalty points against him.
Currently, Bernaz is in first place with 5 penalty points, followed by Buckingham from the USA with 9 and the UK’s Beckett is in third with 15 penalty points.
The contestants will compete in two daily races until the close of the competition on Sunday with the meals race.
Kontides was ranked first during the first World Championships 2017 event in Hyeres, France, second in Miami and again first in Santander with three penalty points.
In order to win the Championships for the first time in his career, Kontides must finish within four points of Bernaz who has 7 points.
