Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides was crowned Laser class world champion for the first time on Tuesday after holding top spot in Split, Croatia.
Bad weather meant there was no racing on Tuesday so Kontides, in first place at the start of the day, was declared the winner.
It is the first time he has become world champion after shooting to fame as an Olympic silver medalist at the 2012 London Games.
“I’m very happy. I am a World Champion for the first time in my career. A dream becomes reality. I was ready for the fight and it showed in the results,” said an overjoyed Kontides.
