A Greek Cypriot kiosk owner was arrested by police on Monday for the possession of 39 cartons of contraband cigarettes with customs duties valued at €1,373.
The VV1 brand of cigarettes – which did not display the relative health warnings in Greek and Turkish — are believed to have been smuggled through from the north.

The stash was discovered in Nicosia during a joint police and customs and excise operation.
The kiosk owner was released after paying a €6,000 fine.
The cigarettes were confiscated and are to be destroyed.
