Jail for former police officer who caused road death

The Limassol District Court has sentenced a 64-year-old former police sergeant to six months in prison after finding him responsible for a traffic incident that killed a motorcyclist.

He was also docked seven points put off his driving licence which has, in addition, been suspended for 12 months.

The court deemed the defendant responsible for an April 17, 2013 traffic incident on Limassol’s Makarios III Avenue that resulted in the death of 52-year-old motorcyclist Neophytos Georgiou.

The court had heard how the 64-year-old had driven his car into the opposite lane of traffic, colliding with Georgiou’s motorcycle.

Georgiou, who had been wearing a crash helmet at the time, later succumbed to his serious injuries.
