In a plenary session the House of Representatives unanimously voted into law the transformation of the Department of Merchant Shipping into the Undersecretariat for Shipping. The move is expected to expand the government’s capacity to handle all shipping-related matters, along with streamlining various processes.
In an announcement, Minister of Transportation Marios Demetriades hailed the decision, saying that shipping is a huge contributor to the Cyprus economy.

“It is our obligation to ensure that Cyprus shipping has all the necessary means so that it may rise to the challenges of the global shipping industry, staying at the same time competitive,” said Demetriades.
The decision to form the Undersecretariat was also saluted by the Cyprus Shipping Chamber which said that the innovative new institutional structure will help Cyprus shipping, and consequently the economy, grow.
