Hermes Airports has undertaken the responsibility of airport security in Cyprus after signing the relevant agreement with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works on Tuesday.
The agreement comes after a cabinet decision on aviation security aimed at improving the quality and time for operational works and services and the improvement of customer service.
Matters of national security and the screening of arrivals and departures will remain within the responsibilities of the state.
In light of the new arrangements, Hermes Airports has called for tenders for the provision of airport security services and all the associated responsibilities, as well as a separate tender responsible in overseeing the security provider’s adherence to company regulations and operational procedures.
The new measures are expected to relieve a great deal of police manpower which will be transferred to other departments within the police force.
The final overseeing of the security providers, as defined by the European Commission, falls within the duties of the Civil Aviation Authority and the European Committee.
