Adopt a kitten this weekend

If you’re lacking some feline companionship or would just like to help make life better for kittens in Cyprus, be sure to go along to an adoption day at ‘To Koukounari’ Café within Aglantzia’s Academias Park on Saturday.

Speaking on behalf of a team of volunteers from Nicosia feeding and looking after stray cats, Sendrine Kountourides told In-Cyprus.com, “These last few months have been very hard on us because of the unprecedented number of kittens carelessly dropped there by people. We have managed to get many adopted, in Cyprus and abroad, we have lost some, unfortunately, and many are still with foster families”.

This, Sendrine said, had prompted the volunteers to organise the adoption day and crafts event in order to rehome some kittens and to raise funds to settle vet and food bills. The event is taking place with the assistance of registered charity The Cat Protection and Welfare Society (CAT P.A.W.S.,) she noted.

People will be able to take kittens home on the day as they will be at least three months old and have received their first vaccination.

“They will be adopted with a CAT P.A.W.S. contract,” Sendrine noted, adding: “The adoption fee is €20 and, with this contract, all the adopted kittens can be neutered for free at one of our accredited vets when they are old enough”.

She underlined the importance of neutering to help control the stray cat population.

“Contrary to public belief, stray cats do not live happy lives. They often get very sick, have all kinds of health issues that we do not see in house cats, and die quite young, in very sad conditions. Let alone kittens who rarely stand a chance in the wild. We are trying our best to keep them alive and in the best possible condition, but we need funds. Hopefully this event will help us and our cats.”

Even those who would not like to adopt a cat but would like to help in another way can go along to support the effort while also enjoying children’s activities and the chance to purchase crafts, homemade cakes, and more.

The event begins at 5pm and Academias Park is situated along Larnaca Avenue in Nicosia.
