It might have to do with the economic crisis, but then again, it could be the fact that our cities are finally becoming more urban. One element in this urbansque era is the bar. Not the big, impersonal bar with casual music and drinks, but the small one with a more personable character. One such bar is Gouni in Nicosia. We love the playful style in this amusement bar. There is a wheel of fortune as soon as you step inside and miniature elephants out on the playground. Even the straws in your drink will put you in a fun mood since they come with decorated mustaches. The room itself, with an almost theatrical essence and a long narrow bar, will entice you to sit there for hours. On the drink menu, there are about 15 signature cocktails, among them the Pomelo which is prepared with freshly-squeezed pommel and the And Some More with gin, coriander and cucumber. Since everything is made fresh, some drinks are added on or taken off of menu depending on season. And when you get hungry, it is worth trying something from the kitchen, especially those dishes that are prepared meticulously. Take pizza for example, they make everything from scratch, including the dough and pizza sauce. Also noteworthy, homemade beef burgers, salads, salmon with horseradish and fresh radish. So this is how you can pass time at Gouni, having your cocktail and enjoying great music picked by owner Vaggelis Limneos, who is known to have a huge collection of LP’s with sounds from all over the world.
Gouni is running a Happy Hour these days from 6pm to 8pm. You can find selected wines €10 a bottle, platter with burger €30, cheeseburger with a fresh cut of potatoes but also dishes for those who are fasting at €6.
Open Wednesday-Sunday from 6pm to 2am (coming soon – open daily). 2E Chr. Sozou, Nicosia, 22 101 587.
